Olympic Games

Badminton became a full medal sport at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Competition includes men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

The Olympics carry unusual importance because they occur only once every four years and reach audiences beyond the normal badminton circuit. Qualification rules change by cycle, so current official documents should be used.

BWF World Championships

The World Championships crown champions in the same five disciplines. They are a title event rather than simply another tour stop. Entry is governed by qualification and nomination rules for each edition.

The event schedule can interact with the Olympic cycle, so do not assume that it follows exactly the same calendar every year.

BWF World Tour and Finals

The World Tour is badminton’s elite annual circuit. Events are organized into levels, with higher-level tournaments generally offering more ranking points, prize money, and stronger fields.

The World Tour Finals concludes the season for leading qualified players and pairs. It is different from the World Championships: one ends the tour season, while the other awards world titles.

All England Open

The All England Open is one of badminton’s oldest and most prestigious tournaments. Before modern world championships and Olympic badminton, winning it was often regarded as one of the highest achievements in the sport.

Thomas Cup and Uber Cup

The Thomas Cup is the world men’s team championship, and the Uber Cup is the world women’s team championship. National teams compete through singles and doubles matches.

The format rewards squad depth, lineup strategy, matchup planning, and the ability to perform for a national team rather than only as an individual.

Sudirman Cup

The Sudirman Cup is the world mixed-team championship. A tie can include all five disciplines, so success requires strength across men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

Other important competition

Badminton also includes continental championships, junior world championships, Para badminton events, national championships, leagues, and local tournaments.

Follow current schedules carefully
